The story opens with Sebastian Cloud deep in virtual reality, rowing along a country stream, where he plays the part of a Romantic poet. Soon he goes to work at the local live arena, in the near future, to pay off debts. Few men face a more wrenching contrast between dream and reality.

In a surprise substitution, Sebastian faces Rudy the Robot in mortal combat and is taking a beating when beautiful Virgina jumps into the arena to save him. She is the estranged wife of powerful industrialist Volton Drago, who has gained influence at this fighting resort in the Pacific Northwest.

Sebastian and Virgina become lovers--and enemies of the obsessive Drago, who devises bizarre contests for the fighting duo and chases them into the wilderness when they try to escape. Approximately 18,000 words. Caution for violence.

The first chapters of this novella were entirely confusing to me. Because it talked about gladiators, fighting and their type of weapons, I automatically assumed it was back in the days of Rome during Christian times. Then it threw in some looking through reality glasses and that is the way it progressed through the entire story. Sometimes it spoke of modern conveniences and then went into the Roman gladiator and mines and never did it distinctly say when all of the events were occurring. Sebastian was the gladiator/poet in the story who eventually was partnered in the arena by Virginia when she joined him as a gladiator. Then the story jumped around with different people, different explanations that were not continuous and even changed tense at times. It had much action, but didn’t seem to stir up the danger and fear that novels ordinarily do. Perhaps this is because it would have been better as real novel instead of a short story trying to stuff everything in. I would like to see the author rewrite this as a regular novel and change the title so that it more represents the story itself. I am giving my review three stars for the story as it now exists.

The Romantic edition by Hudson Owen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received this book free from Story Cartel for my honest review.

I enjoyed this short story that follows the tale of two gladiators fighting for their freedom. In fact I wish I had more background and I could see this as a full novel that has much more time to build the characters, the world, and the climax itself....however even as a stand alone it managed to do all of those things fairly well.

One thing I suggest would be to not start with "semi chaste" sex scene...I was confused in the first few chapters of what reality in the book was. It might have been better after a fight as a way to escape the violence.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book. Overall, the story was very interesting, but the writing deterred from the story line. The story jumped around a lot and there were points where I had to reread the paragraph again because it seemed like something was left out. The time period seemed to change between ancient and futuristic, which was very confusing at the beginning of the book. The writing was very choppy, as well.

If you're looking for an immersive book, one you can really sink your teeth into, I wouldn't recommend this book. However, for a mindless read, this one had just enough action to keep it from being boring.
Full disclosure I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. The opinions below are entirely my own.

First of all, some condolences to the author - severe critique of one's work can be very hard to hear. However, it is this reviewer's opinion that this book was not at all ready for publication.

There are good ideas in here. A dystopian, futuristic setting where debt rules and the debtors are made to fighting for their freedom seems a compelling idea, and from what I saw of this world, it was very enticing. There was an interesting interplay between money and power - how the manager was better off financially than his gladiator, but had no power, for instance. Unfortunately, this book is all foundation. Even the sentences are bare-bones. For instance, this excerpt is one character teaching another swordplay

"They practiced swordplay with the short sword. Thrust and parry. He showed her moves."

Most of the book is written like this. Regrettably, it is not at all compelling. Furthermore, though the setting is interesting, the characters are poorly fleshed-out. There are good guys and bad guys, but what drives them, what scares them, what moves them - these are all left relatively unexplored. The book is quite short in fact - my .pdf was 65 pages long, 's ebook version says 75. At $2.99, they need to be 75 very well-crafted pages, and unfortunately, "The Romantic" does not deliver.
Sebastian Cloud is a man of two worlds. To the patrons of the Rock Island Casino & Resort – Live Arena, he is “Strike,” the champion gladiator of 27 matches against man and beast. At home, he is thoughtful, deliberate, spiritual, romantic, and completely comfortable in his own skin – physically, mentally, and emotionally (almost). Fighting to pay off a debt to the Yakuza, he is close to realizing his goal when a new partner in the resort pits him against a new gladiator robot. During the bout, Strike destroys the robot and wins the sympathy and heart of the partner’s beautiful, gladiator-in-her-own-right wife – Virgina. The adventure ensues and suspense mounts as Sebastian and Virgina attempt to outrun her husband’s (Volton’s) wrath and revenge.

The author has packed adventure, suspense, and romance into a compact 75 pages. The Romantic is a fun story, cinematically told, that you can pick up and enjoy from beginning to end in one sitting. (I highly recommend reading this at one go from start to finish.) Author Hudson Owen builds a complete adventure without leftover fluff giving us the minimum information to establish setting (the northwest), history, and character back story. It was quite a satisfying drawing me back for a second reading less than two weeks after first. My first experience was completed piecemeal, and I enjoyed it, but I picked up much more (the building of the relationship between the two protagonists for one) when reading was uninterrupted.

The story is presented in such a way that it is almost like watching a film. Sebastian is introduced to us via glimpses of his day. Also, dialogue follows naturally speaking and conversational patterns. Characters switch topics when talking to each other rather than completing one idea before going on to the next just as people do in real life. This took me some getting used to but when I began to “hear” the characters speaking, it really felt more believable.

Elements of the book – the dialogue patterns, the lack of side-bar details, and extraneous exposition - just may not be everyone’s taste, but I don’t want to warn anyone off this very good adventure. Relax and just enjoy. I think that it will entertain anyone that picked it up. (Parents, there are scenes of intimacy so this is not for children.) And if the author even decided to redevelop this as a longer work leading into a series I think he’d have a winner that way as well. I know that he’d get my attention, cash, and time.
